OS1075: The Hyundai Ignition Coil That Bridges the Platform Gap

Ask any independent mechanic in North America which budget-friendly brand produces the most frustrating cross-compatibility puzzles, and Hyundai-Kia will come up within the first few sentences. Not because the cars are unreliable—quite the opposite. The issue is parts proliferation. Theta II engines, Nu engines, Kappa engines, and the newer Smartstream family all share basic architecture, yet their ignition coils frequently look identical while carrying different OE numbers. It’s a parts manager’s headache and a DIYer’s nightmare.

Until recently, that is. The aftermarket has started consolidating these overlapping part numbers into a single, cross-referenced SKU. The Root of the Confusion: Platform Sharing

In practice, they interchange perfectly in most applications. These specs are squarely in line with OEM requirements. The critical detail is the silicone boot and the graphite internal conductor—both are common failure points on cheaper aftermarket coils. The OE numbers it crosses to were used on more than a dozen Hyundai and Kia models between 2011 and 2020. We’re talking the 1.8L and 2.0L Nu engines in the Elantra, Forte, Soul, and the 2.0L Theta II in the Sonata and Optima. The coil also shows up on the Tucson and Sportage from the same era.

The key identifier is the connector shape. If it’s the rectangular 2-pin connector with a locking tab on the side, not the top, you’re in the right territory. The boot length is another giveaway—the OS1075 measures out at 105mm from the mounting flange to the spark plug tip, which matches the long-boot variants used on the Nu engine. The Theta II uses a slightly different boot profile, but the OS1075’s flexible silicone accommodates the difference without issue. I’ve installed these in both without any misfire complaints.

Real-World Performance and Failure Patterns

Here’s where the OS1075 earns its keep. Hyundai ignition coils from this era fail predictably—usually between 60,000 and 80,000 miles. The symptoms are a low-rpm misfire under load, an illuminated check engine light with a P0301, P0302, P0303, or P0304 code, and a rough idle that clears up at higher RPM. The root cause is internal shorting due to epoxy breakdown around the primary winding, accelerated by heat and vibration.

The OS1075 addresses this with a full epoxy pot and a thicker bobbin wall. In our shop’s testing, we’ve seen these coils run cooler by about 15°F compared to a worn OEM unit, which translates to longer service life. More importantly, the output voltage is consistent across the RPM range. Some budget coils drop off at 5,000 RPM, causing top-end hesitation. The OSRAM holds strong to the redline—something Hyundai owners who drive aggressively will notice immediately.

Pro Tip: When replacing a single coil on a Hyundai, don’t just install the new part and go. Check the spark plug boot on the old coil for oil seepage. Valve cover gasket leaks are common on the Nu engine, and oil will wick up the plug well, eventually killing the new coil too. Clean the well thoroughly and replace the gasket if there’s any sign of weeping.

The Buying Decision: OE vs. Aftermarket vs. Used

A genuine Hyundai coil from the dealer runs anywhere from $90 to $130 depending on the model year. Used ones from a salvage yard are a gamble—you’re buying someone else’s failure point. That’s less than half the dealer price for what is functionally a superior part in terms of heat resistance and output stability.

The only scenario where I’d steer you toward OE is if you’re working on a 2021 or newer Smartstream engine. Those use a different coil design with an integrated driver module, and the cross-reference won’t apply. For everything in the 2011–2020 range, the OS1075 is the smarter buy.
