Mercedes-Benz’s M256 inline-six engine is a masterpiece of packaging, but it hides a dirty secret: the ignition coils sit buried under a mountain of plastic and wiring. When cylinder 3 starts misfiring at 60,000 miles — and it will — you’re looking at a 90-minute job that pays 1.2 hours. The margin is thin, so you either work fast or you work smart. What You’ll Need

The Replacement Sequence
Step 1: Disconnect the battery negative terminal. Wait 10 minutes. The M256’s ECU holds capacitor charge that can bite you — and the coils, ironically, are the most sensitive component to voltage spikes.
Step 2: Remove the engine cover. There are six push-clips and two Torx bolts at the rear. Pull straight up, don’t pry. The clips break if you look at them wrong.
Step 3: Unclip the wiring harness from the fuel rail. This is where most DIYers panic — the harness is zip-tied to the injector wiring. Cut the zip ties, don’t yank. You’ll replace them anyway.
Step 4: The coil pack sits under an aluminum heat shield. Remove the three 8mm bolts. The rear bolt is the annoying one — use the swivel socket.
Step 5: Remove the coil’s electrical connector. Press the red tab inward, then pull. Do not use a screwdriver. Ever.
Step 6: The coil is held by one 10mm bolt. Torque spec is 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) — this is critical. Over-tightening cracks the coil housing; under-tightening causes arcing.
Step 7: Pull the coil straight out with a twisting motion. It has an O-ring seal that grips the spark plug well. If it fights you, use a coil puller tool — don’t pry against the valve cover.
Step 8: Apply a thin film of dielectric grease to the spark plug boot’s inside lip. Not the terminal. The lip.
Step 9: Install the new OS1327. Push down until you feel the O-ring seat, then torque the bolt to 9 Nm.
Common Mistake: Reusing the old spark plug. The M256’s coil-on-plug design transfers heat through the plug. A worn plug kills a new coil in 5,000 miles. Replace plugs while you’re in there — NGK 95770, gap 0.028″.
