The New Passat’s EA888 Gen 3 engine is a solid piece of engineering, but it has one recurring weakness that keeps independent shops busy: the ignition coil. If you’ve pulled a P0301 or P0302 code on a 2016–2022 Passat 2.0T, you already know the drill. Misfires under load, rough idle at stoplights, and a check engine light that always seems to appear on a Friday afternoon.

The service data is clear. Coil failures on this platform typically start appearing between 60,000 and 90,000 miles, though some owners report issues earlier, especially if the car has been tuned or driven hard. The factory coils are adequate, but they degrade faster than they should, particularly on cylinders 2 and 3, which run hottest due to their position in the cooling jacket flow.

Signs Your Ignition Components Are Done

The New Passat doesn’t hide its ignition problems. You just need to know what to listen for and what the scan tool is telling you.

  • Replace in sets. If one coil has failed, the others aren’t far behind. Replacing all four at once is cheaper than a second tow bill in three months.

Pro Tip: When reinstalling coils on the EA888, apply a thin film of dielectric grease to the inside of the rubber boot. This prevents moisture ingress, which is a primary cause of premature coil failure on this engine. Most coil failures I see on Passats are not electrical — they’re moisture-related.

Here’s the thing about aftermarket coils on the EA888: the quality gap has narrowed considerably. The early aftermarket coils from a decade ago were hit-or-miss, but the current generation of Chinese-sourced coils from established brands like OSRAM are built to spec and tested more rigorously. The key is buying from a supplier that actually tests the coils rather than one that just sells whatever arrives in a container.
