Volkswagen Misfire P0302: Why the OSRAM OS1021 Is the Fix We Reach For

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat with a 2.0 TSI rolls into the bay on a Tuesday afternoon, engine shaking hard enough to rattle the coffee cups on the tool cart. The owner swears it started after a jump-start. “Battery’s dead,” he says. “Maybe that messed with the computer.”

It didn’t. The scan tool shows a flashing check engine light, a cylinder 2 misfire, and a stored P0302 code. The alternator is pushing 13.9 volts. The battery tests fine at 680 CCA. The problem is not electrical supply — it’s ignition delivery. This is the classic Volkswagen coil-on-plug failure pattern, and any experienced VW tech recognizes it within minutes.

Common Symptoms That Aren’t the Battery

Volkswagen owners tend to blame the battery for everything from sluggish starts to rough idle. But a failing ignition coil produces a distinct set of symptoms that often mimics low voltage:

  • Flashing or blinking check engine light during acceleration
  • Rough idle that smooths out at higher RPM
  • A single-cylinder misfire (P0301–P0306) that returns after clearing the code
  • Fuel economy that drops noticeably over the course of a week
  • Occasional no-start after the engine reaches operating temperature — a coil’s internal short can pull down the entire ignition circuit

The dead battery symptom is real, but it’s usually secondary. A failing coil on modern TSI and FSI engines can draw excessive current in stages. It won’t necessarily kill the battery overnight, but it will stress the alternator and cause erratic readings across the CAN bus. That’s why owners report “weird electrical stuff” in the days before the misfire actually sets a hard fault code.

Diagnosis: Do This First

Stop guessing and start testing. Here’s the sequence we use in the shop:

  • Read all modules, not just the engine. Look at the misfire counters in the ECU live data. VAG-COM or OBDeleven will show per-cylinder counters — cylinder 2 will be climbing while the others stay near zero.
  • Swap the coil to another cylinder. This is the definitive test. Move the suspect coil from cylinder 2 to cylinder 3, clear the code, and drive. If the misfire moves, the coil is dead. If it stays on cylinder 2, you’re looking at a plug, injector, or compression issue.
  • Inspect the coil body and boot. Carbon tracking — thin black lines on the rubber boot or plastic housing — means the coil has been arcing internally for weeks. That tracking usually appears when the spark plug gap has opened up, forcing the coil to work harder than it should.
  • Check the spark plug before condemning the coil. A worn plug on cylinder 2 creates excessive secondary ignition resistance that eventually kills the coil. Install a fresh plug or at least verify the gap before dropping money on a replacement.
  • Verify engine ground integrity. A corroded chassis ground or a loose battery terminal can produce intermittent P0300 codes without a single hard coil fault. It’s rare, but it happens — and it wastes an hour if you skip the check.

Pro tip: Never sell a single coil to a Volkswagen owner without checking the remaining three. On the EA888 engine family, if one coil fails at 60,000 miles, the others are close behind. We quote all four.
