SIERRA Ignition Coil Failure: A Step-by-Step Replacement Guide for the 5.3L V8

The phone rings on a Tuesday morning. Regular customer, 2015 GMC Sierra 1500, 5.3L, 112,000 miles. Check engine light on, rough idle, stumble under light throttle. Code P0303—cylinder 3 misfire. You’ve seen this movie before. On these Vortec engines, a failing ignition coil is the most common culprit after spark plugs. The good news: replacement is straightforward, and the aftermarket now offers solid alternatives to OE. The bad news: one wrong torque value or a missed dielectric grease application, and you’re chasing the same code next week.

Here’s the procedure we use in the shop, plus the torque specs and pitfalls that separate a clean fix from a comeback.

Diagnosis First

Before pulling parts, confirm the coil is bad. Swap the suspect coil with a known-good cylinder, clear codes, and road test. If the misfire moves with the coil, you’ve nailed it. If not, check the spark plug, wiring harness, or injector. On the 5.3L, coil failure often follows water intrusion from a cracked valve cover or a careless pressure wash. Inspect the coil boot for carbon tracking and the connector for corrosion.

Tools and Parts Needed

  • 10 mm socket and ratchet (for coil bolt and coil cover on some models)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound range, 0–100 lb-in)
  • Dielectric grease (small tube)
  • Spark plug boot puller (optional, but saves frustration)
  • New ignition coil – for this job, we used a quality aftermarket unit compatible with GM’s LS-style coils. Step-by-Step Replacement on the SIERRA 5.3L

  • Disconnect the battery. Negative terminal first. This prevents accidental short circuits and resets the ECM adaptive learning once the job is done.
  • Remove the engine cover (if equipped). On most 2014–2018 Sierra 1500s, the plastic cover pops off with a firm upward pull. Set it aside.
  • Unbolt the coil cover. Some years have a thin metal shield over the coils. Remove the 10 mm bolts and lift it off.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector. Press the locking tab and pull straight back. Don’t twist or pry—you can damage the pins. If the connector is stuck, spray a little electrical contact cleaner and work it gently.
  • Remove the coil mounting bolt. A single 10 mm bolt holds the coil to the valve cover. Use a ratchet and short extension. Torque spec for this bolt is 89 lb-in (10 Nm). Do not guess—over-tightening cracks the plastic coil housing or strips the aluminum threads in the valve cover. Under-tightening lets the coil vibrate loose.
  • Pull the coil straight up. It may take a firm tug. If the rubber boot is stuck to the spark plug, use a boot puller or rock the coil side to side gently. Never yank the wire.
  • Inspect the old boot and spring. Look for carbon tracks, burns, or a collapsed spring. Replace the boot if it’s damaged (most aftermarket coils come with a new boot and spring pre-installed).
  • Prepare the new coil. Apply a thin film of dielectric grease inside the boot where it contacts the spark plug insulator. Also dab a tiny amount on the coil’s electrical terminals to prevent corrosion. Do not over-grease—it can migrate to the spark plug tip and cause misfires.
  • Install the new coil. Push it firmly onto the spark plug until the boot seats. Then press down the coil body until it rests on the valve cover. Install the mounting bolt and torque to 89 lb-in.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector. You should hear a click.
  • Reinstall the coil cover and engine cover. Double-check that no wiring is pinched.
  • Reconnect the battery. Then start the engine. Let it idle for 30 seconds, then rev to 2,500 RPM briefly to clear any residual misfire data. Clear diagnostic codes with a scan tool or—if you’re confident—the truck will clear them after a few drive cycles.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

“I torqued it to ‘good-n-tight’ and now the coil is cracked.”

The coil bolt should never exceed 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Use a torque wrench. On these aluminum valve covers, stripping the thread is permanent unless you helicoil.

Another frequent error: reusing the old spark plug. A weak spark plug can kill a new coil within weeks. The 5.3L wants AC Delco 41-110 or equivalent gapped to 0.040 inch. Replace plugs in sets of eight when doing coils.

Cross-threading the coil bolt is common because the hole is deep and the bolt is short. Start the bolt by hand until it turns freely, then finish with the ratchet.

Forgetting to check the harness ground. On some Sierra models, a loose ground strap near the passenger side coil pack causes intermittent misfires that look like coil failure. Inspect and tighten before condemning parts.

Pro Tip: Batch Replacement

On the 5.3L, if one coil fails, the others aren’t far behind—especially past 100,000 miles. The labor to replace all eight is almost the same as doing one (once the cover is off, each coil takes two minutes). We recommend replacing all coils at once if budget allows. It saves the customer a second diagnostic fee and your shop a repeat visit.
