ATLAS Misfire Solved: How One Ignition Coil Replacement Restored Power and Fuel Economy

The phone rang mid-morning. Long-time customer, 2019 ATLAS X with the 1.6L four-cylinder—the same engine family Suzuki used for years in the Jimny and Swift before Suzuki pulled out of certain markets. Owner said the car had been “gutless” for two weeks, the check engine light blinking on and off, and fuel economy had dropped from 35 mpg to barely 27. He’d already swapped plugs and cleaned the MAF. No change.

I pulled the codes: P0303 (cylinder 3 misfire) and a pending P0300 random misfire. Classic coil-on-plug failure pattern—intermittent at first, then steadily worse as the epoxy insulation breaks down under heat. On the ATLAS, cylinder 3 sits right above the exhaust manifold, so it sees the most thermal stress.

Diagnosis Confirmed — Coil Resistance Out of Spec

A quick bench test of the ignition coil from cylinder 3 showed primary resistance at 0.8 ohms (spec is 1.0–1.4), and secondary was reading nearly open. The other three coils were within spec but had visible hairline cracks near the spark plug boot. The customer wanted a permanent fix, not a band-aid.

I recommended replacing all four coils with the OS1088 OSRAM ignition coil. It’s a direct OE replacement for Suzuki part number 3340078M000, which is also the OEM fitment for the ATLAS 1.6L. OSRAM has been making ignition components for decades, and their epoxy potting holds up better than the original supplier’s—especially on that hot cylinder.

The Swap — 45 Minutes, Four Bolts

Removing the old coils took less than ten minutes. The ATLAS’s plastic engine cover pops off, then each coil is held by a single 10mm bolt. I applied a thin smear of dielectric grease to each boot before seating the new OS1088 coils. Important: the ATLAS uses a specific coil boot length—the OS1088 matches exactly, so there’s no gap or loose fit.

After resetting the code and a 20-mile test drive, the P0303 stayed gone. The owner called the next day reporting the check engine light never returned, throttle response felt crisp again, and fuel economy climbed back to 34.5 mpg on his commute.

Pro Tip: Don’t replace just one coil on the ATLAS if the others show hairline cracks. Even if they pass resistance checks, cracked boots let in moisture and cause intermittent misfires months later. I install OS1088 coils in sets of four—labor is the same, and you save the customer a return trip.
