A Passat rolls into the bay on a Monday morning — MIL flashing, P0302 stacked on top of P0300. The customer has already priced a full set of coils online because “it’s always the coils.” Sometimes it is. Plenty of times it isn’t, and parts-cannon diagnostics burn labor hours and customer trust in equal measure. On a Volkswagen, where coil access on some engines borders on cruel, you want certainty before you start disassembly.
Start With the Basics, Not the Catalog
Pull the plug on the dead cylinder first. A fouled electrode, cracked insulator, or oil-flooded boot mimics coil failure almost perfectly. Verify injector pulse, listen for vacuum leaks around the runner, and rule out low compression if the misfire is constant.

Here’s the trap: a coil that measures fine on a cold bench can still break down under load. Insulation failure only shows up when the windings heat and expand. If the customer reports stumbling after twenty minutes of driving but your numbers look clean, the job isn’t done.
What the Scope Catches That Ohms Can’t
Back-probe the control circuit and capture a few cycles at idle:
- Dwell ramp — a clean, steady rise as the driver saturates the primary
- Burn line — the voltage plateau while the arc crosses the plug gap; a ragged or absent burn line means a weak coil or a fouled plug
- Ring-down — three or more diminishing oscillations after the burn signal healthy windings; a flat, damped tail points to shorted turns
Pro Tip: Retest the suspect coil hot. A careful pass with a heat gun — or simply scoping immediately after a road test — will expose the intermittent breakdown that vanishes on a cold bench. And if the plugs are past 60k miles, replace them with the coils. Fresh coils on tired electrodes is money spent twice.
