Rough Idle, Flashing CEL? Chase the Coil Before You Blame the Plugs

Last week a Song Plus came in with the classic complaint: runs fine cold, stumbles badly once it’s warm, check engine light flashing under acceleration. The owner had already bought a set of plugs online and wanted them installed. Twenty minutes with a scan tool told a different story — P0302, cylinder 2, misfire counter climbing fast at idle and vanishing above 2,500 rpm. That pattern points at the coil, not the plugs.

It’s a mistake I see constantly, and it costs customers money twice.

Diagnose Before You Order Parts

On modern BYD engines, a failing coil rarely throws a dramatic symptom right away. You get a subtle shiver at idle, slightly longer cranking in the morning, fuel trims drifting rich because unburned gasoline is dumping into the exhaust. By the time the light flashes, the coil has been dying for months.

Two quick tests settle it:

  • Swap test. Move the suspected coil to a neighboring cylinder. If the misfire code follows it, the coil is done. If it stays put, look at the injector or compression.
  • Boot inspection. Pull the coil and look for carbon tracking — thin gray or black lines running down the rubber boot. That’s voltage finding a shortcut to ground, and no amount of new plugs will fix it.

Intervals That Actually Hold Up

Spark plugs are straightforward: nickel plugs around 30,000–40,000 km, iridium or platinum anywhere from 80,000 to 100,000 km depending on driving conditions. City stop-and-go traffic eats plugs faster than highway cruising, full stop.

Coils are different. Nobody puts them on a schedule because failure is driven by heat cycling, not mileage alone. Realistically, expect trouble somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 km, earlier on engines that run hot or live in humid coastal climates where boot cracking accelerates.

Here’s the rule my shop follows without exception: every time a coil comes out, the plugs get replaced. A worn plug with an eroded electrode forces the coil to work against a bigger gap, running hotter until the windings break down. Install a new coil on tired plugs and you’re handing the customer a comeback ticket.

The Five-Minute Tune-Up Checklist

Whenever a car like this hits the lift for ignition work, run through this list:

  • Pull all plugs — check gap, electrode wear, and oil fouling
  • Inspect every coil boot for tracking marks or hairline cracks
  • Apply dielectric grease inside each boot before reassembly
  • Wiggle-test the coil connectors for corrosion or loose pins
  • Torque plugs to spec, not by feel — overtightening cracks the shell and creates a leak path

Pro Tip: Never reuse a coil bolt that shows rust on its threads. Ground path resistance through a corroded bolt mimics a weak coil perfectly, and it will send you chasing ghosts for an afternoon.
