Audi Ride Height Sensor Failures: What the Warning Lights Really Mean

The three-inch drop on the driver’s side was the first clue. Then the amber suspension warning appeared on the dash of the 2012 Audi A6, followed by the dreaded “Chassis System Fault” message. For most Audi owners, the sequence is familiar, but the root cause is often misunderstood. While many immediately suspect the air struts or the compressor, the real culprit in a surprising number of cases is a small, inexpensive component: the ride height sensor.

Audi’s adaptive air suspension relies on a network of position sensors mounted at each corner of the vehicle. These sensors report the distance between the control arm and the chassis to the suspension control module. When one fails—typically due to a cracked solder joint, corroded connector, or physical damage from road debris—the module receives erratic voltage signals. The result is a cascade of false warnings.
